Today was one of the top five days of my life so far, and all because of about 10 minutes we spent staring at the fuzzy black and white image of our baby kicking its legs, waving its arms, bobbing its head, wiggling its body - just being alive.

We saw it twitch a little last week, flap its mermaidish, tadpolish tail, and the nurse practitioner told us that was enough to reduce our odds of miscarriage down to 5 percent.

But this week, when we looked at the ever-increasing white blob in the blackness of my nether regions, it took an obvious shape before our eyes. It looked like a real baby! A baby shaped sort of like a Gummi Bear, but a baby nevertheless. We couldn’t stop smiling, watching its stubby leg buds kick back and forth. Even the NP couldn’t stop smiling. We all just watched in amazement. Here, before our very eyes, was a life beginning to be lived.

At only 2.93 cm long (measuring 9 weeks 1 day, right on schedule), it already has all the parts it will ever have, according to our NP - they’re just not quite mature yet. The heart is beating, the crown-to-rump length is increasing appropriately; the baby is moving, it’s living. And, bizarrely, miraculously, it’s all happening inside me.

I have said before that with every week and every successful ultrasound that passes, I get a little less scared. But today is a whole new feeling, something close to certainty.

Today, I saw my baby dance. Today, I am in love.

That is so awesome! I am so happy your baby is active and dancing around in there! It is the neatest thing to see an ultrasound when the baby starts moving around!

That little peanut is so cute! And just wait, one day you’ll look at your baby crawling across the floor and won’t believe it was that same little tiny blob in your belly. It’s crazy!
