One of the many projects we tackled this week was the kitchen. As I mentioned in my last post, the paint on the ceiling, walls and trim was all peeling off in an unattractive – and potentially unsafe – fashion. So we had to scrape, sand, and repaint all of these surfaces.
For the low low price of just $75, our kitchen looks like a new room. It’s brighter, cleaner, safer and all-around more appealing … now that it’s not a-peeling. (Sorry – I couldn’t resist.)

Of course, the other cost was our time and effort. I was sore from head to toe on Thanksgiving Day from all the ladder-climbing, scraping, sanding, ladder-moving, wall-washing, sweeping, vacuuming, trim painting and so on.
I hate heights and usually avoid the tall ladder (sticking with my trusty three-step ladder), but there was no way to scrape the 10-foot ceilings without it. D was busy working on other stuff (more details to come in later posts), so I had no choice – up the ladder I must go.
The good news is by the time I was finished, I’d climbed up and down the tall ladder so many times, it no longer made my knees weak to stand on the top rung. Hurray for me! My fear of heights is gone! Well, at least it has eased up a bit. Maybe.
Anyway, I’m so pleased with the results it was worth it all. The room still isn’t perfect, but it looks dramatically better. I wish I could troop you all through there to see it in person.
Best of all, now it’s ready for the home visit. We were assigned our social worker, and he’ll be calling us in the next week or so to set up an appointment for the home visit. Eeek, this could happen really fast. Thank goodness we got so much done on our time off this week.
