My college roommate sent me a “survey with a twist” e-mail yesterday. It’s like those ubiquitous surveys you fill out saying whether you prefer chocolate or vanilla or like storms, only in this case other people fill out the survey about you.
I sent the survey to a few friends, and some interesting facts about me came to light. To the question, “Am I a rebel or do I follow all the rules?” everyone answered that I am a rebel.
I found myself feeling very pleased about that. I have never been the classic rebel, the preacher’s kid-turned-goth kid or anything like that. I made it through high school without ever getting drunk, and to this day I’m one of the few remaining adults who have never smoked a cigarette. And I’ve gone through phases (namely, high school) when I was extremely concerned with conforming to everyone else. I wanted the name brand shirt, shoes, jeans and purse. I studied the popular girls in class to figure out what made me so different from them … and was it something I could change?
But I’ve also always had an independent streak, and once I got out on my own, I started asserting that independence more and more.
At this point, I’m probably rebellious to a fault. My sister is the same way. We can’t stand to be told what to do, especially if we were about to do it anyway. If you tell me to hurry up, I will slow down.
It’s a Lambert thing. We’re all entrepreneurs, we all dislike authority and routine, and we insist on getting what we want.
If you’re starting to think we all sound like a bunch of jerks, you’re partly right. We can be difficult people; it can be hard for us to get along with others and hard for us to get along with ourselves. We can see ourselves being unreasonable, but we are powerless to stop it.
And yet I am proud of this part of me. I’m proud that I don’t always go with the flow, that I am fixing up an old house, that I am building my own business on eBay. Proud that I’ve made friends with the other rebels in Eutaw and that I’ve drawn Darwin to the dark side with me, though this rebellion thing puts us at odds with each other so often.
The survey results also said I am spontaneous, witty, trendy, fun, smart and determined. I was completely unaware that I was being perceived that way, but I’ll take it.
If you’d like to send out the survey yourself, here it is:
THIS IS A SURVEY WITH A TWIST – YOU fill in the blanks about ME and send it back to ONLY ME. But FIRST, send a BLANK one to all your friends, including ME, so they can return the favor to YOU. They’re really cool to get back. You might find out something about yourself you didn’t know.
