My mom and I went to Atlanta this weekend to help my sister find a rental house. Remind me to never move to Atlanta. Ack. Even on a Sunday afternoon the traffic was more than I ever want to deal with again. I am not cut out for big city life.

I agree. I think it might be different if there was more foot/bike traffic and less car traffic. Some cities have done a good job of reinventing themselves as pedestrian-friendly, mass-transit kinds of places.

This is one of the reasons I left Arlington, Texas. Few sidewalks, no mass transit, abandoned super-malls, mini-malls and strip malls galore and the feeling of downtown completely lost because it no longer truly exists. Where is it’s soul?

Fort Worth has done a phenomenal job of reinventing itself and bringing the downtown back to life but even then, if you don’t live downtown you won’t get there easily from the suburbs via bike or foot. When they say a Texas Mile, they mean it.

Patricia, I know what you mean about Dallas/Ft. Worth! Everything in Texas seems a million miles apart.

I think the South (as usual) is slower about adopting the pedestrian thing. We love our vehicles and the so-called independence they give us. But all the cars sure do make a giant mess of everything.

Atlanta traffic is bad at 11 PM. What a mess! We like our Mayberry, too.
