Has it really been five whole months? Working on my house scrapbook this weekend, I realized we’ve got very little accomplished.

Here’s what we’ve done:

  • Move and unpack.
  • Pull up hideous green rug in master bedroom and wax part of the floor.
  • Demolish ugly ’70s built-in desk in kitchen.
  • Remove old stove vent and install microwave.
  • Install dishwasher.
  • Remove old sink and faucet and install new.
  • Prime and paint most of the cabinets.
  • Add trim to a few cabinets and paint more trim.

In five months, an entire house could be built.

Then again, an entire crew works to build a house. It’s just me and D – with some minor help thrown in from our parents here and there – and just our weekends.

    And Christmas interrupted.

And … and … I’m sure I can come up with some more excuses if I try.

I read about a million other house blogs (check out Houseblogs.net if you haven’t yet), and it seems everybody is making more progress than us. Are we just lazy bums? Are we too busy with other things? Are we making things difficult for ourselves in some way? Or is it because we picked a massive project for our first one?

This weekend we spent half of Saturday working on the kitchen. I primed and painted trim, while D worked on the hinges for the lower half of the kitchen.

Then we went to D’s brothers house, where he worked on his truck with his brother, and I hung out with my sister-in-law, niece and nephew.

On Sunday we slept incredibly late (for us) and laid around the house ALL DAY watching poltergeist movies and Office Space. Then I worked on my scrapbook some more.

I am torn. Half of me feels guilty for taking a break, but the other half of me says, “It’s OK to take it at your own pace. You’ll burn out if you spend every spare moment working on the house.” I do not want to burn out because there is a LOT of work left to do.

Maybe I’m just getting impatient. I want my neat, pretty, finished kitchen. And I’m eager to move on to something else – painting the hallway maybe, or the guest bathroom, or the living room or the dining room. There are so many pretty colors waiting to be chosen.

      Kristin,

Sometimes I wish we could slow down and do LESS – it’s great to be moving forward on projects, but it’s also tiring at times. We just can’t help ourselves – we are obsessed. Teague’s father always says, THE HOUSE WILL BE THERE. You won’t be leaving anytime soon, so if the kitchen of your dreams takes 2 years instead of 3 months, does it really matter all that much?

Your house is adorable and will only get better with time. So don’t be so hard on yourself! ;)

      Kristin–

Word. What Mindy said. We’ve been at this for 2 years (TWO! YEARS!) and we have only completely finished…a bathroom. The upstairs will be done soon, true, and that will give us 3 more rooms. With 6 more rooms to go (including a sad, sad kitchen).

You HAVE to take breaks. You have to goof off. Or else this will burn you out. When it’s all done, you want to remember that your life was fun…not beating yourself up. :) I think you’ve done a LOT.

Thanks, that’s especially comforting coming from two ladies who inspire me so!

If your house is liveable (and it appears to be), relax. The sad (or happy) fact about homeownership is that there will always be something else that can be done. Our friends who bought brand-new homes are finding they either want to do something to their homes or they have to because they weren’t built well. Take your time, take some breaks, savor the moments. Your work will never be completely done.

We have lived in our house for *almost* 2 years now. There is still so much left to be done that it can be overwhelming if we don’t have a sense of humor.

We have completely finished one half bathroom and a bedroom. Had the entire house replumbed, updated our electrical service, bought a new furnace (none of these things show ofcourse), painted the entire outside. Added on a mudroom/laundryroom and a screened in porch. Hmmmm… it sounds like a lot if you don’t see the 4 bathrooms that are gutted down to the studs and the other 20+ rooms that are in dire need of help. We also have numerous projects in various phases of progress.

I love your house scrapbook idea, btw. I think I am going to steal your idea so I can have all the pictures and writing together in one place to share with people when they visit.
